Britain’s spy agency took screenshots from Yahoo webcam chats of millions of individuals globally regardless of individuals were suspects or not, Guardian reports.
This report is based on documents provided to newspaper by American whistleblower Edward Snowden, a former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor.
GCHQ collected images from the webcam chats of over 1.8 million users globally in a six-month period in 2008 alone.
If confirmed, the Guardian’s report would represent “a whole new level of violation of our users’ privacy,” Yahoo said in a written statement.
A GHCQ spokesman reiterated that all of its activities are in accordance with U.K. law and refused to comment on the specifics of any of its programs.
